Help tackle food insecurity by supporting backpack programs and lunch balances!

According to Feeding America, 19.1% of Indiana Kids experience food insecurity, which is defined as "the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food."

Over 8,000 children at Elkhart Community Schools qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. These students receive nutritious free or reduced-price breakfasts and lunches at their schools on Monday through Friday, but may often face a weekend without quality, nutritious food. At every school in the district, ECS cafeteria staff report that students come in on Monday mornings incredibly eager for breakfast, having gone many hours or even days without a meal.

The Elkhart Promise is that every student is known by name, challenged and supported by highly effective staff, and in partnership with the community will graduate ready for college, career, and life. For many of our students, education is hindered by hunger. While our primary mission is educating, not feeding children, it is our ultimate our mission to do what's best for kids, which includes ensuring they are ready to learn. We simply believe in doing what's right and helping children wherever we can.

It's in this effort that we partner with agencies like Cultivate Culinary to provide an avenue for our students to receive delicious, nutritious, frozen meals for the weekend; and Food Bank of Northern Indiana to provide an avenue for our students to receive backpacks of quality, non-perishable food for the weekend.

But the demand for our food insecure children far outweighs the supply. Our partnering agencies are on the brink of exceeding their capacity and food sources, and the district has many children still in need. We humbly ask for your help in supporting Elkhart's most vulnerable children.

Join us is supporting food for students who live in food insecurity. Your donation will be used to help fill weekend food backpacks, bring school lunch balances up to date, and to make sure hunger is not an obstacle to learning.

Elkhart Community Schools proudly partners with the Elkhart Education Foundation as our primary fundraising partner. The mission of the Elkhart Education Foundation is to ignite the power of community, connect generous hearts with education, and provide the resources needed for every child to excel inside and outside of the classroom through extraordinary learning experiences. All donations made through this page will be processed through the Elkhart Education Foundation, who will track designations as selected by donors, ensuring all donations go for their intended use.

We thank the Elkhart Education Foundation for their continued support. In addition to their partnerships on programs like this, the EEF and their donors have been pivotal in raising money for buildings, facilities, programs, extracurriculars, learning gardens, libraries, field trips, world-renowned guest speakers, summer camps, and more. In 2018, the EEF launched the innovative "Kindness to Prevent Blindness" initiative, which provides free eye exams and two free pairs of glasses for every Elkhart child in need.

If supporting students' needs and education is close to your heart, we encourage you to visit the Elkhart Education Foundation's website and consider becoming a legacy donor.
